DEWAR - The Dewar Lady Dragon varsity fastpitch softball team earned the runner-up trophy this past Saturday at the annual Dewar Invitational Fastpitch Softball Tournament at Al Kessel Field.
The Lady Dragons needed four straight wins - three on Saturday - to earn a spot in the tournament title game after suffering a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat to the Kiefer Lady Trojans in the second round on Friday.
The Dewar ladies kicked off the 3-day event with an 11-3 drubbing of the Moss Lady Pirates last Thursday.
After the loss to Kiefer began Day 2 of the annual tournament, the host Lady Dragons notched an 8-3 win over the Okemah Lady Panthers in the loser's bracket second round last Friday.
Dewar continued their run through the loser's bracket Saturday, earning wins over Stigler (7-0), Porter (13-2), and Kiefer (8-2), respectively, to punch their ticket to the championship game against the Varnum Lady Whippets.
In order to take home the team championship of their tournament, the Lady Dragons needed to defeat the Lady Whippets twice. The Lady Dragons' dreams of a championship finish were thwarted in the first (of a possible two) championship game, as the Dewar ladies dropped a 15-6 decision to Varnum to finish runner-up to a very talented Lady Whippet squad that outscored their first three opponents in the tournament by a combined 33-0.
The Lady Dragons were scheduled to travel to Canadian on Tuesday for a showdown with the Canadian Lady Cougars. The Dewar ladies will close out the week at the Stuart Tournament this Thursday-Saturday.
