St. Michael Catholic Church
8th Sunday in Ordinary Time
(Ex. 16: 2-15/Eph. 4: 17: 20-24/Jn. 6: 24-35)
We continue to hear John’s Gospel this Saturday.
And the topic I want to share with you is: The Further Hunger.
We cannot have the joys of new world without abandoning the comfort of the old world. Instead of going forward towards the Promised Land the Jews continued to hanker after the “fleshpots of Egypt”. After having fed the people with ordinary bread in the deserted place, Jesus offered them something far better, “The Bread of eternal life.” But they did not understand because they may be focusing too much about the material bread they just ate!
The Church tries to link the first reading today from the Book of Exodus (Ex. 16: 2-15) when the Israelites wandered in the desert, Yahweh their God provided them with the “Manna” every single day with the miracle Jesus made for them with five loaves and two fish to let all of us know that the Old Testament is fulfilled in the New Testament when God became flesh and accompanied with all mankind on earth. God still helps people on their journey of life. This is not a coincidence. It is a purpose Jesus needs to do because he came down from heaven to save all people. He wants to let people know that we are on a journey of life from birth to death. We all need material breads, food…but we also need him the “Bread of Life” as before his Passion He instituted the Lord’s Supper in order to nourish us in spiritual life until we come to see Him one day!
Jesus gave the people who followed him into the desert as much food as they needed. In today’s Gospel he offered them something more wonderful still, a new “manna” from heaven, the bread of life (himself). To “eat” this bread would involve believing in him, entrusting their lives to him, and following him as their sure guide to the kingdom of God. But once again many of them cannot get beyond the material! They are unable to face the further hunger, the hunger of the human heart and the human spirit. They do not even understand what Jesus is talking about, and eventually turn their back on him!
We must all know by now that material things will never satisfy the hunger God has put in our hearts. But have we experience even a little of this inner hunger, the hunger of the heart, the hunger for God? Lucky for us if we have Christ we will satisfy this hunger. No one else but Jesus Christ offered the “Bread of Life”.

I Am The Lord By Mary Beth Morris
The biblical book of Leviticus, the law, is a seemingly endless recitation of minutiae -- every single detail is labored over and repeated. God's reasoning, it's fairly clear, is that, because the Israelites had lived with idol worshipers and they had no idea how things were supposed to work, He wanted to leave no doubt about even these tiniest details.
But here is the thing: God iterates and reiterates the phrase, "I am the LORD." At least a dozen times in chapter 19 alone! That should pretty much call to a complete halt any argument or exception. It worked for a while, but it wasn't long before these "rebellious" people tested and tried God at every turn.
Here we are, more than 2,000 years later. We don't maintain so much oral tradition (I could harp on the reliability and accuracy, which I thoroughly believe, but I won't -- yet!), but we have a belief, a faith, that God is the LORD. The question is, do we do all we can to honor Him and His holy name?
We have this tendency to change things to suit our purposes. I'm not necessarily proposing that we throw out bacon or never eat shrimp. The world could stop revolving and we'd all be thrown into outer space! But have we been going through our lives as if God's commands were a buffet, picking what we like and leaving the rest? That's not how this is supposed to work.
God is the Father, the Creator of all things. His magnificence and glory cannot even be put into words. His might is so great that nothing can stand before Him. Therefore, we must bow. We must bend to His will, not ours. We must accept and follow His commands, not our whims, wants, and wishes. We must live to honor the One who gave us life. Every day, every action must be a reflection of Him. It is He, not we, who said, "I am the LORD."

Maranatha SDA Church, 1213 East Chicago
We invite you to join us at any of our services.
Bible study, Aug/ 4, 9:30 a.m.
With “The Conversion of Paul,” our study this week, Christianity changed forever. Before becoming an apostle of Jesus Christ Saul of Tarsus was an apostle of the Sanhedrin. He was absolutely convinced that he was doing God’s work in attacking Jesus’ followers. But when confronted by Jesus Himself, his question, “What shall I do Lord,” demonstrated his immediate and unconditional willingness to let Jesus be his guide from then on, and a champion for the cause of Christ was born who would boldly take the gospel to the Gentiles and to the then known ends of the earth.
Study texts are Acts 9:1-30; 22:1-3; 26:9-11; and Galatians 1:1, 11-24.
Worship service is at 11 a.m. Saturday at both churches. Midweek service is on Tuesday at 7:30 at the Maranatha church and Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Okmulgee Church.
We welcome you to join us as we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
