St. Michael Catholic Church
15th Sunday in Ordinary Time
(Amos. 7: 12-15/Eph. 1:14/Mk. 6: 7-13)
Today’s gospel shows us how Jesus went about sharing his work with his Apostles. He called them first, trained them step by step, and then sent them to do what he had been doing: preaching the good news of God to the poor, healing the sick, forgiving sinners, expelling demons, etc. The Apostles were very ordinary men like each of us. In no sense could they be called specialists. Yet, Christ involved them in his own work of teaching or healing. Christ Jesus wants us to be part of his work too. Each of us is responsible for a small corner of the world where it is up to us to make the influence of Christ felt. We all have vocations. It may not be a vocation to be ordained to serve God’s kingdom like the Pope, bishops, priests, deacons, or consecrated brothers and sisters. This gospel does not mention those functions. But all of us, by the virtue of our Baptism, we are called to serve and comfort anyone in need, the poor, the hungry, the homeless, the lonely, the aged…Whatever we do for others is priestly ministry, Christ’s own work. This is work we all can do.
If that be so, then as surely as the Apostles, I am doing the work of Christ, especially for the little ones and the wounded ones. Our usefulness to Christ, if we may so put it, depends not so much on our intelligence as on our willingness and generosity.
And so we repeat today’s Alleluia Verse: “May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts that we might see how great is the hope to which we are called and try to serve God’s Kingdom as he invites and encourages all of us to do our daily work for God and others.”

Truth or Consequences By Mary Beth Morris
One day, Cain gave part of his harvest to the Lord, and Abel also gave an offering to the Lord. He killed the firstborn lamb from one of his sheep and gave the Lord the best parts of it. The Lord was pleased with Abel and his offering, but not with Cain and his offering. This made Cain so angry that he could not hide his feelings. The Lord said to Cain: What's wrong with you? Why do you look so angry? If you had done the right thing, you would be smiling. But you did the wrong thing, and now sin is waiting to attack you like a lion. Sin wants to destroy you, but don't let it! (Genesis 4:3-7)
How often does jealousy creep in on us? That's what happened to Cain here, making him "sull up like an ole 'possum," as I heard someone say once. But who really was to blame? And what were the consequences?
It says that "Cain gave part of his harvest" -- not the best part, not the first part, not even the second part, only part. He didn't seem to put much thought into what he needed to give, then, did he?
On the other hand, not only did Abel give the first-born lamb from one of his ewes, he gave the best parts of that lamb as his offering. There was no guarantee the ewe would give him another lamb. And who doesn't like the best cuts of any meat? But Abel offered them up to God anyway.
Whose fault was it that Cain did what he did? And yet he had the nerve to be angry and jealous! But the worst part is that he let it eat at him. In God's own words, "Sin is waiting to attack you like a lion. Sin wants to destroy you, but don't let it!"
Little or nothing has changed about sin since then. Or for us, either. We still want to blame anyone but ourselves for what has happened to us. But causes have effects, and sin can, does, and will have its effect. NO ONE forces us into sin. It's a choice. So when we choose not to do right, we have also chosen to suffer whatever follows, eagerly opening the door to that hungry lion.
It doesn't have to be that way! Just like we can choose sin, we can also choose not to, and, instead, choose Jesus. He cleared our path of sin when He chose the cross. He brought us words of salvation that can he found as easily as opening a Bible. We don't have to let sin in to destroy us. We have the option of keeping that door closed, or not.
So we must ask ourselves: Do we want to live in truth, or do we want to suffer the consequences of our evil actions?
